At Kids’ Food Basket, we believe healthy food is a right, not a privilege. Since 2002, we’ve grown from serving 125 students to providing more than 11,000 nourishing meals every weekday to 68 schools across Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, and Allegan counties.

Position Summary

The Director of Finance leads Kids’ Food Basket’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring strong stewardship, accurate reporting, compliance, and sound financial practices. This role leads the finance team and financial reporting, oversees the budget process, manages the financial audit, and partners across the organization to turn financial information into meaningful insights. The ideal candidate is a skilled nonprofit accounting professional and people-focused leader who values collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Do

• Lead accounting operations, including general ledger, fund accounting, reconciliations, close processes, payroll accounting, cost allocations, and grant-related accounting. 
• Manage the annual budget process and provide forecasts, budget-to-actual reporting, dashboards, and financial analysis to support informed, mission-focused decisions. 
• Strengthen financial stewardship through effective internal controls, regulatory compliance, accurate financial reporting, and leadership of annual audits and required financial and tax filings. 
• Partner with organizational leaders, the Finance Committee, and Board to communicate financial trends, risks, opportunities, and meaningful insights. 
• Lead, coach, and mentor the accounting team while improving financial systems, workflows, reporting tools, and team practices.

What You’ll Bring

• A bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field. 
• Six or more years of progressively responsible accounting or financial-management experience, including at least two years supervising, coaching, or leading accounting staff. 
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, close processes, reconciliations, audits, internal controls, and nonprofit or fund accounting; CPA or CMA preferred. 
• Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems; Microsoft Business Central or similar fund-accounting software strongly preferred. 
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and bring a collaborative, solutions-focused approach.
