Role Description

This is a volunteer role as a Board Member for the American Red Cross - West Michigan Chapter. The Board Member will be responsible for actively participating in meetings, making strategic decisions, and advocating for the organization's mission. Some work will be based in the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area, with flexibility for remote work. Applicants must reside within these specific counties: Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana, Mason, Lake, Newaygo, Osceola, Mecosta, Montcalm, Ionia and Barry.

 

Last year, the American Red Cross:

  • Responded to 62,000 disasters, big and small, providing shelter, food, comfort and more.
  • Provided lifesaving training and information in first aid, water safety and other skills to more than 6.2 million people.
  • Provided more than 422,000 services to service members, veterans and their families.
  • Collected, tested and delivered about 6.6 million units—40% of the nation’s blood supply— for patients in need.
  • Provided disaster, recovery or disease prevention activities benefiting nearly 174 million people outside the U.S.

 

Red Cross Board Functions and Requirements

  • Leverage their network of personal and professional associates to identify, cultivate and steward potential and existing donors of influence and affluence.
  • Assists in the recruitment and referral of diverse and inclusive volunteers, to include board members, to the American Red Cross.
  • Participates in the education of the community to the importance of blood donation throughout the year and especially in critical times of need.
  • Works with local leadership to create targeted volunteer recruitment and engagement strategies to address volunteer needs in the chapter.
  • Attend bi-monthly board meetings and serve on at least one of five board member committees.
  • Review chapter fundraising plans and participate in board activities to achieve its “give” and “get” goals.
  • Promote and facilitate two board sponsored blood drives opportunities within the Chapter.
  • Develop and implement an individual board member engagement plan.
